Leonie Kearney is a wealth of information when it comes to growing heritage roses in subtropical climates and her breathtakingly beautiful garden showcases some of the best varieties for our climate.
Leonie “I've always been interested in old abandoned homesteads and gardens and when I was a child I loved to look over the fence or go into old gardens and it always fascinated me to find a rose there that had survived and grown and been abandoned and to find it still surviving in that garden after 20 or 30 years. I felt that if that rose could grow there, I could grow it in my garden as well.”
Leonie has been an active member of Heritage Rose in Australia If you want heritage roses that grow in Brisbane this is the place to go. Allow an hour or two to wander around the Homestead.

Silkies Rose Farm
Located in the middle of Victoria, Silkies is a great rose farm. Diana Sargent has been growing roses for over 20 years and sells direct or via mail order catalogue over the net. The office is located in the middle of the farm and is used to store the rose fertilisers and the chemicals to keep roses alive. Swane's Nursery Dural Sydney NSW
Swane's have had a long association with the rose societies in Queensland. Swane's would fly up for pruning days and offer a selection of new release roses for trial releases in SE Queensland. Pruning days are special as the whole rose community meets at a significant rose Garden in South East Queensland. Swane's were also involved in the early days with Parliament House Rose Garden in Canberra. They supplied the majority of the roses that are still growing in what has become the Old Parliament House Rose Garden(takes a couple of hours to visit). Swane's support the local rose breeders acting as the agent for the bare root stock provided through mail order catalogue. We always try to get the latest catalogue from Swane's. If you are in Sydney the shop and rose garden are worth the visit. Have a cup of coffee under the awnings next to the rose garden.
