Flowers at Newstead House
St Fiacre, the Patron Saint of Gardeners has his Feast Day on the first day of Spring and Newstead House celebrates this by having “A Spring Affaire”. This year a Saturday event included the launch of a book about Patrick Leslie who had the House built in 1846 and Sunday visitors enjoyed a tour of the House and afternoon tea on the verandah. 8 members from some Brisbane garden clubs arrived at Newstead House armed with secateurs, greenery and enthusiasm to create floral arrangements in each of the 10 rooms of the House. For some this was the first time and their comments were “I enjoyed the experience” and “I would do it again”. The House is no longer open on Fridays which made the job easier - no visitors to work around, but harder - no doors open for quick access. Friends of Newstead Chairman commented on the beautiful fragrances each day the House was opened.
The Qld Herb Society and Hibiscus Society of Qld were also involved in the weekend providing a demonstration of Tussie Mussie making and flowers.
It is always a special treat to be a part of this day, decorating the House with perfumed flowers to set off the wonderful collection of historic furniture and pictures. Newstead House is well worth visiting as part of a inner Brisbane bus trip.
